Man and ill mother camp outside office in Beijing after house torn down: report
A Chinese resident whose home has been razed to the ground by the authorities is camping outside a local government office with his sick mother in protest against the forced demolition.
Li Qiang and his mother had been staying outside a local office of Xiaotangshan county in the Beijing district of Changping after their residence was torn down on Nov. 17 last year, according to Radio Free Asia.
The family was left homeless in the winter by the destruction, which hundreds of black-clad workers executed with bulldozers, RFA reported. Up till early January, dozens of residents of the demolished neighborhood had persisted in the protest alongside the family, but many had left by now.
The county’s party secretary Wang Hongmin received a report about the duo but did not respond to it, RFA said. Li’s mother had fallen ill amid the chilly weather, it said, with yet no indication of whether officials would finally heed their calls.
