Protester’s detention photo leaked to “scare away” supporters, activist says
Personal particulars of an arrested pro-democracy protester, including his photo, have been leaked and used to threaten like-minded activists, a campaigner has suggested.
The batch of personal information, including a photo apparently taken when the activist was being detained, briefly appeared on the campaigner’s Telegram account with an intimidating message that was quickly deleted. The message sender also threatened him to stop being involved in a campaign to reveal policy brutality, saying “you will be jailed after we beat you up.”
The activist, who gave his name as Matthew, told Apple Daily that the message included the arrested protester’s name, his height and a case number of his looming court proceedings. Those particulars could have been leaked by people involved in his case, he said. He accused the perpetrator of creating white terror in an attempt to stop him from making a formal complaint against police brutality, adding that he is worried about his own safety.
“We have been putting together a file relating to police brutality...we must expose this in case we disappear,” he said.
Barrister Alan Leong said such information could be possessed by a variety of people involved, including prosecutors, law enforcement officials or lawyers representing the case. But exposing it by anyone is a violation of regulations. Another lawyer, Ng Chung-luen said those who have done it could be arrested for criminal intimidation.
