Xi Jinping aims to warn US with ‘five nevers’ speech, observer says
Chinese President Xi Jinping outlined five categories of foreign interference that China would never allow during a recent speech that experts see as a warning to the United States.
The Communist Party leader introduced the so-called “five nevers” during a speech at a Beijing assembly to commemorate the 75th anniversary of China’s victory over Japan in World War Two.
Xi said during his speech that China would “never allow anyone to distort or alter the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics, or deny or vilify the great achievements the Chinese people have made in building socialism.”
Xi added that China would “never allow anyone to split the Communist Party from the Chinese people.” The country would also never allow for the history and mission of the CPC to be distorted, for others to bully the nation into submission or obstruct the Chinese people in their pursuits of a better life and the right to peace and development.
The strongly worded speech showed that Xi had become “impatient” with increased pressure from the U.S. and felt the need to give Washington a warning signal, political analyst Willy Lam told Apple Daily.
Tensions between China and the U.S. have grown to new heights in recent months. President Donald Trump last month issued executive orders that would ban China-based video-sharing app TikTok and Tencent’s messaging app WeChat.
Beijing has also protested against increased U.S. military activity in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, including air defence exercises by U.S. reconnaissance aircrafts carried out in areas close to where the Chinese People’s Liberation Army conducted drills.
Xi’s latest speech was consistent with his nationalistic way of thinking and his unwillingness to bow to pressure from the U.S. and its allies, Lam said. He added, however, that the speech was more a gesture to satisfy growing nationlistic sentiments at home, rather than a real invitation to wage war against the U.S.
