The purpose of this message is to share the facts regarding the change of repertoire for last week’s concerts.
The LAST thing we want to do is to alienate our subscribers, and we clearly made a mistake by not telling them about the change of repertoire well in advance. For that mistake, I apologize unreservedly on behalf of the HK Phil administration.
The HK Phil has come under a lot of criticism recently, whether justified or not, and we seek to re-build trust with as many people as possible and to be transparent in all our dealings.
We feel extremely honoured that Yuja Wang agreed to give us two weeks of her valuable time and to perform three different programmes in five concerts over nine days.
It is not unheard of for an artist to request a change of repertoire in between the printing of a brochure and the actual concert dates (which, in this case, were more than a year later). It was in January that the repertoire change was confirmed, and all HK Phil marketing materials from then on had the “correct” programme.
If a concerto is changed, sometimes the symphony in the second half needs to be changed as well, to balance the programme.
For the record, the sponsors of last week’s concerts had nothing to do with the change of programme.
Many great soloists have performed with the music in front of them. Just a few months ago, the violinist Gidon Kremer played the Sibelius concerto in the Cultural Centre with music. One of the all-time greats on any instrument – Sviatoslav Richter – always played with music and latterly never committed to the repertoire he was going to play until just before the concert.
Thank you for your understanding.
