羡慕與妒忌

American Heritage Dictionary 的「用法小組」主席 Steven Pinker 剛推持一份關於 jealous 和 envious 用法分別的新簡報。
傳統上 jealous 源自恐怕失去重要的東西，envious 則出於希望得到不屬自已的，但日常口語中，jealous 往往也包括 envious 之語意，反之則絕無僅有。用法小組成員當中，三分之一認為 jealous 可解作 envious，43% 則只接受用於人的情況下混用（即是說，不應用 jealous 來表述希望擁有不屬自己的物品：”I am jealous of my friend who has a good family.” 可接受，但 good family 變成 Farrari 就怪怪的了。）
小組顯然認為妒忌 (jealous) 和羡慕 (envious) 最好還是不要混用，盡量以傳統用法分清楚「怕失去」和「想擁有」：
// It is evident from these results that many careful writers prefer to see the distinction between the two words maintained, with jealous being reserved for situations where one fears losing something and envious used for situations where one wants what one does not have.//
