Canada notes the decision yesterday of Hong Kong's Court of Appeal on the sentencing of Joshua Wong, Nathan Law and Alex Chow, the result of the Hong Kong Government's appeal to seek greater punishment than the initial court judgment in their cases.
The strong ties between Canada and Hong Kong include deep people-to-people connections, a common legal heritage and shared values of human rights.
The ability to gather and to protest peacefully is a core human right. Hong Kong is widely recognised as an open society with a long tradition of popular engagement in political expression.
Canada hopes that yesterday's decision will not discourage people in Hong Kong, especially the young, from continuing to exercise their human rights to freedom of expression and peaceful demonstration, rights that are guaranteed under Article 27 of the Basic Law.
