【Statement on abusive attacks on judges】
We deeply regret the recent abusive remarks made by some protestors against a magistrate on grounds totally unrelated to the reasonings in her judgment.
Not only are such insulting remarks unfounded, but they also constitute unwarranted attacks on the independence of the Hong Kong judiciary, with a racial undertone which has no place in our society. We particularly note that similar abusive comments were made against a non-Chinese judge in a criminal trial around a year ago. We express our great concern that such unwarranted personal abuses of judges may become a trend if nothing is done to rectify it.
Non-Chinese judges constitute an integral part of the landscape under the Basic Law and have profound contribution to Hong Kong’s rule of law and legal system. Any attack on judges for reasons unconnected to their decisions, irrespective of their nationality, sex or other personal attributes that they possess, are wholly unacceptable and must be strongly condemned. The current situation calls upon the Secretary for Justice to take swift actions in defending the judiciary.
