著名認知心理學家 Anne Treisman 逝世　享年 82 歲

    我們看見的世界是由腦海「創造」而來——認知心理學家 Anne Treisman 改變了科研界對我們怎樣感受、看見世界的想法，提出頭腦 (Mind) 才是讓我們了解世界的一扇門。她在美國時間 2 月 9 日在家中因中風離世，享年 82 歲。
    1935 年， Anne Treisman 於英國約克郡韋克菲爾德 (Wakefield, Yorkshire) 出生。大學時， Treisman 聽從父親建議，修讀法國文學。 1954 年，她從劍橋大學紐納姆學院以一級榮譽資格畢業。獲得優秀成績的她使她取得獎學金，一年內修畢心理學學士課程。
    之後她獲牛津大學收錄，攻讀博士學位。期間，她開始對感官系統感興趣，並以心理學家 Donald Broadbent 著作為指引，於 1962 年完成畢業論文《Selective Attention and Speech Perception》。自此，她便醉心於注意力 (attention) 研究。值得一提是，在牛津大學期間的幾年間，她是唯一的女職員。雖然有時遭性別歧視，但對她仍然全無影響。她寫道：「我假設我可以做所有我有能力、有意欲去做的事。而事實證明我可以做到。」
    1980 年，她與心理學家 Garry Gelade 共同撰文，提出特徵整合理論 (Feature integration theory, FIT) 。理論指出，人類觀看影像並非以整個「觀看」，而是在短時間內，將不同特徵：顏色、線條、形狀、大小等資訊組合而成。整個過程必須用到相當注意力。理論初時廣為科學界挑戰，但經歷多年無數研究檢測驗證，理論仍然得以在學界中屹立不倒。而她們的理論更為解開人類認知能力，奠定重要研究基礎——她在 1980 年發表的文章，至今仍不斷被科學家引用。
    她的成就分別於 1989 年、1994 年和 1995 年被英國皇家學會、美國國家科學院及美國文理科學院肯定。1996 年，她更是首位獲得 Golden Brain Award 的心理學家。在 2013 年，時任美國總統奧巴馬亦向 Tresiman 頒發美國國家科學獎章，以表彰其貢獻。
    心理學家 Steven Pinker 在新作《Enlightened Now》形容 Anne Treisman：

    世間有不同的科學奇材——（擁有）數學能力、科技精藝精湛的、對自然觀察入微的——但也許最令人讚嘆的是，她能以簡單、典雅的方法，令人明白深層次現象的天賦。 Anne Treisman 的視覺和錯視實驗所用的技術雖然簡單，卻簡單得可在入門心理學課堂中教授、堅實得令學生讚嘆、且深刻得可助科學家解釋感知、注意力、認知、神經解剖學及意識研究。

    There are many kinds of scientific genius­­­—mathematical prowess, technological virtuosity, a naturalist’s keen eye—but perhaps the most impressive is the gift of illuminating a deep phenomenon with a simple and elegant demonstration. Anne Treisman’s experiments on visual search and illusory conjunctions are so low-tech they can be carried out in an intro-psych lecture, so robust that they elicit audible gasps from the students, and so profound that they help explain major features of perception, attention, cognition, neuroanatomy, and consciousness.

    雖然 Anne Treisman 擁有卓越成就，但她也是一個相當友善、甚具幽默感的科學家。曾與她工作過的麻省理工學院認知神經學教授 Nancy Kanwisher 向《紐約時報》憶述：「當我們一班『小朋友』正擔心 FIT 再被挑戰，但 Anne 只是輕描淡寫地說了一句：『又來了。』」
