有份參與研究的康涅狄格大學生態及演化生物學家 John Cooley 指,這是終極的演化競賽,但蟬明顯處於下風,無法以長生命周期避過真菌感染。他又相信未來將會有更多類似的真菌感染機制被發現,或會帶來更多科學突破。無論聽起來如何恐怖,蟬團孢霉早已與周期蟬共存至少百多年,正如侏儸紀公園的名言所云: Life will find its way.
