【自爆】婆羅州新發現自爆蟻 犧牲自己噴出咖哩味毒液保巢

這隻不足 1 厘米長的蟻外表可能平平無奇，但牠們會寧願犧牲小我，自爆噴出有毒黏液擊退入侵者。這種學界稱為 autothysis 的自殺式防衛行為在其他社會性昆蟲也普遍出現，例如蜜蜂會在受威脅時使用螫針。
不過，在婆羅州新發現的這種 Colobopsis explodens 則是首度被發現會自爆的蟻，亦是自 1935 年以來的新蟻品種。研究現已刊於 Zookeys 。
該研究由維也納自然史博物館昆蟲學家 Alice Laciny 領導，團隊於婆羅洲北部叢林的樹頂發現這些細小的紅色自爆蟻，團隊形容牠們為「特別容易自我犧牲 (particularly prone to self-sacrifice) 」，因為在團隊稍為接近其巢穴即會自爆保衛其他蟻隻。

當團隊更仔細地觀察其自爆行為時發現，這些自爆蟻會先抓實、咬住不理警告的入侵者，然後將尾部對准對方，最後屈斷自己的腹部噴出黃色有毒黏液。 Laciny 指毒液味道雖然獨特，但絕不難聞更帶咖哩味。
然而，並非所有 C. explodens 都會自爆，只有一般工蟻與無生殖能力的雌蟻才會出現過種自殺式防衛行為。
