1.8 億年侏羅紀化石 或填埔鱷魚家族演化史空缺

1996 年，仍是一位學生的 Attila Fitos 在匈牙利西北部山脈中發掘出一副長 5 米的動物化石。經過檢驗後，發現該化石為來自 1.8 億年的侏羅紀鱷魚，並收藏在布達佩斯一間博物館至今。
由愛丁堡大學古生物學家 Mark Young 領導的研究團隊最近就重新分析該包括尖牙與脊椎的化石，發現該鱷魚屬全新品種，並為表揚 Attila Fitos 的貢獻，團隊將之命名為 Magyarosuchus fitosi 。

M. fitosi 是侏羅紀其中一種最大型的沿岸掠食者，最特別之處是有來自兩個完全不同史前鱷魚科特徵。當時的鱷魚部份在背部與腹部均有骨質盔甲，亦可陸上行走；另一批鱷魚則四肢均是鰭肢、有長尾鰭，沒有骨質盔甲。
而團隊發現 M. fitosi 既有重型盔甲，亦有長尾鰭，相信該品種是鱷魚演化史上其中一個重要的階段。團隊又指，該化石除了顯示當時鱷魚多樣性高，更提供重要資訊了解鱷魚如何演化成類似海豚與殺人鯨的水中生物。研究報告已刊於 PeerJ 。
