40 萬年前人類已懂回收棄置燧石 再造處理食物工具

現代人為環保回收紙張與塑膠等製作新的物品， 40 萬年前的史前人類將燧石 (flint) 回收再造，又是甚麼一回事？刊於《人類演化期刊 (Journal of Human Evolution) 》的研究發現，以色列特拉維夫附近的凱塞姆洞穴 (Qesem Cave) 內有大量已損耗或已丟棄燧石被回收，並再用作利器，精確切割肉類與植物這些食物。

該洞穴在 2000 年一次道路工程中意外發現，當中已出土不少史前人類文物或牙齒，以及發現過火燒動物的痕跡等等，幫助人類學家對該地區數十萬年來的人類活動有更多認知。此前，西班牙、意大利與北非也曾有出土過被回收再用的石器，在以色列範圍則是首度有類似發現。
特拉維夫大學的考古學家聯同意大利專家利用兩種不同光譜技術，分析收集到的燧石表面殘留微粒，發現全是肉類、皮毛、脂肪、骨頭，以及植物組織，而這些微粒均殘留在燧石的外邊緣。團隊又嘗試使用該些燧石，推論燧石可能會與其他工具被從新組合成較大的切割器，較輕易地處理肉類、植物、莖根等食物。
團隊指，回收損耗或已丟棄燧石製作新工具並非偶然的行為，亦無證據顯示當時的史前人類缺乏石器，因此認為回收再造是個有意識行為，且早已在舊石器時代成為人類的演化與文化之中。
