南極群島發現超罕見熔岩湖

說起火山，我們都會想起熔岩會噴發湧出地表。然而，在罕見情況下一些活火山的熔岩不會爆發只停留於火山口，形成長期出現的半固態熔岩湖，維持時間更達 100 年。
現時已知 1,500 個活火山，只有 7 個有長期熔岩湖形成。最新刊於 Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research 的研究指，在南極南桑威奇群島桑德斯島上的米高山 (Mount Michael) 發現全球第 8 個熔岩湖。
米高山的火山活動已有近 200 年的記錄，早在 1990 年代的衛星數據也顯示米高山有熱異常，但無熔岩從火山口溢出，當時已估計有熔岩湖出現。不過由於當地極度偏遠，且山頂物理環境惡劣，有一層可能由火山口氣流造成的軟雪層，因此人類一直無法登山作實地考察證明說法。

英國南極考察中心 (British Antarctic Survey) 的團隊以 2003-2018 年陸地衛星計劃 (Landsat) 與哨兵 2 號 (Sentinel-2) 等衛星拍下的高解像圖片，確認米高山是否有熔岩湖。

最終團隊從短波紅外線數據發現，米高山有一個闊 110 米的熔岩湖，雖然外圍會因地殻散熱有較低溫度 989°C ，但熔岩湖中心最熱處溫度高達 1,279°C 。
團隊指，發現並不簡單，但更重要是如何以新的科技，發現這類「極罕見」火山現象，並可從太空更密切監察火山活動，更快知道火山造成的潛在威脅。
