An open letter to Hong Kong Citizens and HKSAR Government
from participating artists in “Art in LegCo”
The proposed bill regarding extradition to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance has caused concern among the people of Hong Kong. Over a million people marched on the street, but the HKSAR Government has repeatedly ignored the demands of the people. On 1 July 2019, tens of thousands of protestors spontaneously occupied the Legislative Council, putting further pressure on the government.
Artworks created by local Hong Kong artists are installed in the Legislative Council Complex. According to the Legislative Council's Art Acquisition Project which started in 2009, “The Legislative Council (the "LegCo") considers that Art is a significant part of a vibrant and dynamic international city like Hong Kong”. We are the creators of some of these artworks. We think apart from art, the voice of the public, and the defense and pursuit of freedom are even more significant parts of Hong Kong.
Damage to artworks and facilities in the Legislative Council can be restored, but the younger generation, the lives of the students and their confidence in the world can never be lost. When the young protestors exhausted all rational and civilized ways to protest, they demonstrated amazing creativity and resilience. What they have in exchange is the insensitivity of those in power. Art and cultural workers shall manifest humanity, enlighten insights, enrich civilization, and keep with the spirit of humanism. We walk with the people to build and protect Hong Kong.
Once again, we call on the authority to respect life and respond to the demand of Hong Kong Citizens and that of the young people.
